The five definitions of personhood in the 18th and 19th centuries that came to be after the implementation of slavery can best be illustrated in the narratives of African slaves during that time. Below we are the narratives of four slaves: James Albert, Venture Smith, Boyrereau Brinch, and Noah Davis.
